Niro vs Insight: high MPG hybrids
Kia Niro Hybrid
The Kia Niro Hybrid 2022 is one of three Niro variants, the others being a plug-in hybrid and an all-electric vehicle. The Niro Hybrid uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the latter allowing a more precise reaction to throttle demands compared to the sometimes muddled response of a CVT.
The powertrain’s 195 lb-ft of torque is enough for reasonably brisk acceleration. The EPA’s combined fuel economy estimates range from 43 mpg to 50 mpg, depending on trim level. A plug-in hybrid with 26 miles of pure electric range and an EV variant are also available.
Kia calls the Niro a crossover, but it’s more of a large hatchback. Either way, the rear hatch opens to reveal a generous 22.4 cubic feet of luggage space, which extends to just over 63 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded down. Space for passengers is also good, even in the back seat.
The Niro Hybrid is offered in the LX, LXS, Touring, Touring SE and EX Premium trim levels. The base version lacks the model’s list of active safety features, but the LXS and above get them. They include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and lane keeping assist.
An 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto is standard, though wireless charging doesn’t arrive until the top trim. The top trims get a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, but it requires a wired connection for smartphone mirroring.
Honda insight
Now in its third generation, the latest Honda Insight is by far the biggest consumer and the most liveable. The Insight is an attractively styled conventional sedan. The interior is nicely finished and easy to interact with, although it does take some getting used to with Honda’s button shifter.
Under the hood is a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and an electric motor driving the front wheels. Total power is 151 horsepower and acceleration is faster than most hybrids.
Fuel economy averages 55 mpg in the Insight EX and 51 mpg in the premium Touring. (Honda has discontinued the Insight LX for 2022.)
All Insights come standard with forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and cruise control. adaptive speed.
An 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto and satellite radio is also standard. The Touring adds leather upholstery, heated seats, power driver’s seat, sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, Wi-Fi hotspot and premium audio system.
