GODFREY – The village of Godfrey continues to set the stage for growth and development along Godfrey Road.
The village is in the process of finalizing the expansion of the corporate area along Godfrey Road south to Homer Adams Parkway.
“With the completion of the Enterprise Zone, three economic tools will be in place to enable business growth and development,” said Jim Mager, director of economic development for Godfrey. “There will be a corporate zone, a TIF (tax increase funding) district and the Godfrey business district.
“The combination of these programs facilitates commercial development from the north end of Godfrey Road to its intersection with Homer Adams Parkway, then west on Delmar Avenue.
As the village positions itself for future commercial development along Godfrey Road, ongoing projects are underway.
With the Stamper Lane extension project, a developer will demolish the Halloran Auto Sales structure to make way for a new shopping center, and Stamper Lane will be extended on the east side of Godfrey Road. Another upcoming project is at Scooters Coffee, 5206 Godfrey Road. Dollar Tree is also beginning construction of a new store at 6519 Godfrey Road.
In addition, there is the construction of the new Eclipse car wash behind the excavation continues to demolish the old car wash and gas station to make way for the new car wash. In each of these projects, old-fashioned and unattractive structures will be removed and replaced with modern, attractive buildings.
Ultimately, with further business expansions, there will be an increased revenue stream from sales taxes, which minimizes reliance on personal property taxes. In addition, new business development opportunities will provide residents with more alternatives for shopping, dining, entertainment and professional services.
“While the past of Godfrey Road was significantly a residential area, it is now transitioning to a commercial area,” Mager said. “Going forward, the Village of Godfrey is committed to improving business development along Godfrey Road. “
